PVP Democrats Monthly Meeting

May 21, 2017 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

On May 21, 2017 the Palos Verdes Democrats will meet at 2:30 pm in the community room of the Peninsula Center Library.

Please join us.  We encourage you to come at 2:00 pm for our social time where we enjoy delicious homemade goodies and conversation with like-minded Democrats.

Our program this month addresses the issue of injustice in the American bail system.

Did you know that nearly 60 percent of the inmates in jails in the United States are pretrial detainees who have not been convicted of a crime?  An estimated 75 percent of them have been charged with nonviolent crimes.

Many of these citizens are in jail simply because they cannot afford to pay the high bond amounts imposed. Those with money can buy their freedom while poor defendants remain incarcerated awaiting trial, costing State and local governments an estimated $14,000,000,000 each year.

Congressman Ted Lieu has introduced H. R. 1437 to discourage the use of payment of money as a condition of pretrial release in criminal cases, and for other purposes.

The club will show the video “The Bail Trap: American Ransom” by Brave New Films.

Nicolas Rodriquez, District Director for Congressman Ted Lieu will attend and talk about H.R. 1437 as well as answer questions regarding other activities that the congressman is involved in.
