I traveled in early December to Atlanta, Georgia to help canvass for Senator Raphael Warnock’s reelection. The trip was organized by the LA Westside Democrats HQ with about fifteen attendees. Canvassing took place in Marietta, Kennesaw, and Appleton – all suburbs in the NW perimeter of Atlanta. In an encouraging early sign, a sizable number of voters had already participated in early voting (and indicated voting for Warnock). There were opportunities to see Sen. Warnock speak in person. We could observe at the AAPI rally that significant political inroads had been made in Georgia’s AAPI community. At the rally, in addition to Sen. Warnock and Sen. Ossoff, the speakers included local and Congressional leaders. Among those leaders were CA CD 28 Rep. Judy Chu, and WA Rep. Pramila Jayapal. The official election night party had a standing room only crowd watching the election results live on CNN in the Marriot Marquis’ ballroom. Among the speakers were Atlanta mayors past and present, film director (and fellow Spellman alum) Spike Lee and, in a widely praised victory speech, Senator Warnock.
