NOTE: A video of the meeting can be seen after this article.  Some video times are annotated within the article.

Connie Sullivan, PV Dems President, opened the Palos Verdes Democrats November 20 meeting began with announcements and a preview of the November meeting.

Connie recognized the elected officials who were in attendance – Rob Katherman from the Water Replenishment District (WRD) and Harold Williams, who was recently  re-elected to the West Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD) Division I, and Zoe Unno, Palos Verdes Library District Board Member.  Several new members were in attendance as well as several members who were attending their first in-person meeting.  Connie proclaimed we’re the only Democratic Club in LA County that is conducting in-person meetings.

Connie announced the 66th Assembly District breakfast which is held the last Sunday of the month at 10:00AM at Mimi’s Cafe in Torrance.  It’s a good time to socialize with fellow Democrats in Mimi’s outdoor patio.  Reggie, PV Dems webmaster, said he plans to start posting the event on our website.

5:15  Local Election Results — “We did really well.”

  • Ted Lieu, District 36 House of Representatives
  • Ben Allen, District 24 State Senate
  • Al Muratsuchi, District 66 State Assembly
  • Paul Seo, RPV City Council
  • Sara Deen and Ami Gandhi, PVPUSD Board
  • Harold Williams, WBMWD, Division 1
  • Robert Luna, LA County Sheriff

In terms of our local activism, Connie said, “We really upped our game.”  Our activism chair, Caryl Schwartz, had phone banks for Jay Chen every week.  And, locally, this is the third year we’ve had a door hanger campaign; this time in RPV.  Even though this is only three data points, Connie pointed out, “Every single time our candidates have won.”

10:01  2023 Assembly District Election Meetings (ADEMS), Jan 7 and 8 or Jan 21 and 22

In January of each odd-numbered year, the CA Democratic Party holds an election in each of the 80 CA Assembly Districts (AD) to elect 7 “self-identified female” and 7 “other than self-identified female” to be Assembly District Delegates (ADD) to represent the AD they are registered in.  Anyone who lives in the 66th AD and is a registered Democrat is eligible to run.

To register as a candidate, go to ademelections.com/home – registration is open Nov 9 at 12:00PM to Dec 9 at 12:00PM.

11:42  Activism Report – check out From the Activism Chair tab at pvpdemocrats.org

Caryl Schwartz, PV Dems Activism Chair, wasn’t able to attend the meeting, but reported the following:

We defied history in the Midterm Elections, there was no shellacking of Democrats.  We gained a Senate seat in Pennsylvania!   The important thing is Biden will be able to get Judges and appointees confirmed.

BUT, activism didn’t end on Nov. 8:  The Run-off Race between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and Republican Herschel Walker is scheduled for Dec. 6.  Neither candidate cleared 50 percent required in Georgia to win the November 8 election.  Winning this will ensure a Democratic majority of + 1 in the Senate.

Google:  Mobilize Links for Warnock for opportunities for phone banking, texting, post carding and letter writing.
