|Our effort was epic. Unprecedented. Historic.
This victory belongs to the millions of people across the country who changed their lives to become volunteers, activists, and candidates. It belongs to every single person who volunteered for two hours to register voters, knock on doors or make phone calls. It belongs to the women who make up 70% of the Resistance. It belongs to the young people who turned out in record-shattering numbers. It belongs to the retired women and men who have made activism their JOB. It belongs to the organizers who brought us together and made us more than the sum of our parts. It belongs to the people who organized fundraisers, and those who donated their hard-earned money over and over, dropping pennies in a wishing well until our wishes came true.
It belongs to every single one of us who stepped out of your comfort zone because there was too much at stake to stay home… every one of us who went out there to change the world just by talking to strangers. One conversation at a time, we beat back apathy with empathy. And along the way, became something between a family and an army.
We lost some tough battles – but we won this war. We pulled America back from the abyss.
WE DID IT. WE DID IT. WE DID IT.
This victory means the Resistance is real.
It means activism WORKS.
It means there is hope.
A loss would have made it difficult to build our movement in the lead-up to 2020. Instead, the momentum from this national victory will supercharge the Resistance. Last night’s victory was proof of concept.
Now WE ARE EMPOWERED.
And more will join us.
In Southern California, we flipped 2 of our swing districts outright: 25 and 49. In 25, Trump Rubber Stamp Steve Knight will be replaced by the fantastic Katie Hill! And in 49, the horrible Darrell Issa’s former seat will now be held by the solid progressive Mike Levin!
In 48, as of this morning, the inspiring Harley Rouda has officially ousted 30-year incumbent supervillain Dana Rohrabacher, aka Dana Russian-backer, aka Putin’s Favorite Congressman. In the HEART of Orange County, we just ended decades of Republican control. WE DID THIS.
And in 39 and 45, Gil Cisneros and Katie Porter are still in the game. It may take a few weeks, but the math is on their side, and they could wind up ahead in the end.
Every single volunteer hour has contributed to this vast cathedral of activism we have built. It’s breathtaking.
Volunteering is such an act of love and courage – so it makes sense that in the last two years, we’ve met some of the most inspiring people we’ve ever known. Your passion and hard work move us, fuel us, make us tear up on a regular basis.
WE LOVE YOU ALL for what you have done. You have made us better people. The time and effort and gas money you crazy heroes are willing to spend just to make the world a better place melts our hearts. These have been the two best-spent years of our lives. THANK YOU times a million.
Our next move? Take back the Senate and the White House in 2020. But right now – CELEBRATE. Because that’s what you do when you save the world.
TO THE RESISTANCE!!!
