January Meeting

Join us for our hybrid (In-person and Zoom), club meeting which will be held at the Peninsula Center Library, 701 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates, California, 90274 on January 19, 2024.   Our meeting starts at 2:30 pm but join us at 2:00 pm to chat with other Democrats.

Reproductive Rights in the New Adminstration Panel Discussion

Our first meeting of the new year will feature an expert panel that will discuss the topic, “Reproductive rights in the new administration.”  Our expert panel will attend our meeting in-person.

Joining us on the panel will be Sylvia Castillo, who is the Executive Director of the California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom. Ms. Castillo became executive director in 2024 after serving for nearly 10 years as a coalition member and 6 years on the Executive Advisory Committee. She is a seasoned leader and a champion for reproductive health, rights, and justice, with more than a decade of experience in coalition building. A native of Los Angeles, she received her Bachelor of Arts in History and Latin American Studies from UCLA and attended the University of San Francisco Public Affairs graduate program.

We are also pleased to have Minouche Kandel on our panel. Ms. Kandel is a Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Southern California specializing in the LGBTQ, Gender & Reproductive Justice Project. Ms. Kandel has been published in the Yale Journal of Law and Feminism and is a recipient of the 2008 California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (Public Interest Law category), and the Daily Journal's 2009 Top 100 Lawyers in California. Ms. Kandel received her B.A. from Yale University and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.

In addition to Ms. Castillo and Ms. Kandel, we have invited 2 other experts in the reproductive health field to join us on the panel.

Russ BakerJoining our meeting via zoom, we will have Russ Baker. Russ Baker, a graduate of and former adjunct faculty member of Columbia Journalism School, has written for The Nation, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Salon, Esquire, the Guardian, and the Village Voice, among others. He is author of the bestseller, Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Invisible Government and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years, which the late Gore Vidal called “One of the most important books.” He is founder and editor-in-chief of WhoWhatWhy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, publicly-funded news site that seeks to address under-covered stories and provide missing context on the critical issues of our time. Russ will be speaking about "How to Combat Right Wing Disinformation With Facts and Truth." After a brief discussion he will be taking questions.
