PV Democrats August Meeting

August 16, 2020 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Once again, we are delighted and grateful to have Superior Court Judge Tom Long, former RPV mayor, and PV Democrats member, walk us through the video of UCI (University of California Irvine) Law’s 2019-20 Supreme Court panel discussion of the decisions and provide insight as to how these rulings will affect us.  Tom is a graduate of Stanford Law School, has been a Superior Court Judge since 2015, and will be up for re-election in 2025.

The UCI Supreme Court review panel is moderated by Richard Hasen, Chancellor’s Professor of UCI Law and Political Science. The panel includes:  Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law, Berkeley Law; Ariane de Vogue, Supreme Court Reporter, CNN; Rachel Moran, Distinguished Professor of Law, UCI Law; Kate Shaw, Supreme Court Contributor for ABC News and Professor of Law, Cardozo Law; and, Michael T. Morley, Assistant Professor, Florida State University College of Law.

This Supreme Court term involved the fewest cases (53) since 1862 and includes two months of court cancellations, which has not happened since the outbreak of influenza over 100 years ago.

The cases under review cover a wide range of topics, including the role of church and state, abortion, DACA, separation of powers, LGBTQ rights, and voting rights.  The Q&A section includes a discussion on the influence of John Roberts, the future of the court and upcoming important cases.
