Upcoming Meeting

Join us for our hybrid (In-person and Zoom) September club meeting.  Our meeting starts at 2:30 pm, but join us at 2 pm to chat with other Democrats.

We will be starting our meeting with a short report from our on-the-scene reporters, Connie Sullivan and Tim Dixon, reporting on the buzz at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.  Come and share the excitement.

League of Women Voters Speakers to Discuss November Ballot Propositions
September 15

Nancy Mahr and Ann Nye, speakers from the League of Women Voters, will address PV Dems on September 15 at the Peninsula Center Library to provide an in-depth analysis of the propositions on the upcoming November ballot.

The presentation aims to inform voters about the key issues and potential impacts of each proposition. Mahr and Nye will break down the often complex language of the propositions, offering clear explanations to help voters make informed decisions.

The League of Women Voters, known for its nonpartisan stance, will emphasize the importance of voter participation and understanding the implications of each ballot measure. This event is part of the PV Dems efforts to inform the public and its members.

Kamala Harris / Tim Walz Lawn Sign

By Reggie Jue —

As we did in 2020, the Palos Verdes Democrats has procured a limited number of Harris/Walz lawn signs.  These signs will be provided with a request that the recipient make a donation of $20 to the Palos Verdes Democrats.

All net proceeds from lawn sign donations to the Palos Verdes Democrats will be sent to local congressional races, key national senate races, and/or the Harris for President campaign prior to the November elections. To request a sign, click on the button below:

September 2024 President’s Report

By Rob Wynne —

Joining the Palos Verdes Democrats brings you into close contact with local leaders while you learn about local issues. Our club regularly meets in person with councilmen and women, mayors, school board members and other officials. Recently, our club made an impact on the national stage. Two of our board members, past president Connie Sullivan and second vice president Tim Dixon, served as delegates to the Democratic National Convention. You may have seen them on TV, as both appeared in crowd shots on both MSNBC and CNN.

We’re a small club in a small town, but we are proud to enjoy a big presence on the national stage. Here’s what our local delegates had to say about the historic convention where Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination for President.
“I took away a strong sense of hope about the upcoming election and the opportunity to rid our country of a dangerous man,” says Sullivan.

Dixon added, “I had the pleasure of attending the 2000 DNC as a guest but the excitement and energy at this year’s convention was extraordinary by comparison. I believe that the way Kamala Harris has taken over the campaign for president, unified the Democratic Party, and launched a campaign that to date appears flawless is evidence of her ability to be a great president. I believe that this election is the most important election in my lifetime and that democracy is literally on the ballot.”

Sullivan and Dixon are just two examples of the many well-connected Democrats in our club who are happy to connect with you and expand your network and connections during this critical election year. Whether it’s local, county, state or national issues that interest you, the Palos Verdes Democrats will be a great resource for you.

Two Democrats Running for PVPUSD School Board

Two local Democrats are running for two open seats on the PVPUSD School Board against two conservative opponents who stand against many of the principles that we hold dear.  Please remember to vote down-ballot to ensure our PV children get the education and protections they deserve.

August 2024 Club Meeting Report

By Reggie Jue —

Our most recent club meeting was our annual review of the SCOTUS term featuring long-time PV Democrats member Judge Tom Long.

Every August since 2014, Judge Long has shared his commentary on the cases highlighted in the UC Irvine School of Law “Annual Supreme Court Term in Review” panel discussion (which is in its 14th year).  Judge Long joined us in-person at the Peninsula Center Library.

From the Activism Chair

By Caryl Schwartz —

The countdown has begun to Election Day! Are you fired up and energized after the Convention and Kamala’s acceptance speech? Are you ready to get involved?

We need to win the Presidency and majorities in both the House and Senate.  With Democratic majorities legislation could be passed to undo the damage of the Dobbs Decision and restore Women’s Reproductive Rights nationwide.  Republicans state legislatures have Gerrymandered districts and passed voter suppression bills to disenfranchise minority voters since the critical Voting Rights Act of 1965 was gutted by a 2013 Supreme Court ruling, Shelby County vs Holder. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement would modernize what the Supreme Court decision ruled was an outdated “formula that determines how and which states have a pattern of discrimination.”  Pass stronger gun safety legislation, end the ambiguous situation Dreamers have been living and pass ethics regulations for Supreme Court justices.  Create policies and pass laws beneficial to the American public.  Time to undo the damage of Trump, ideological SCOTUS and a chaotic Republican House.

Studies have shown that direct voter contact through canvassing and phone banking increases turnout by 4%.

Palos Verdes Democrats Represented at the 2024 DNC

By Connie Sullivan —

PV Democrats, Tim Dixon and I were delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in August.

I’m going to assume you watched the 4-day event on TV and have your own opinions about who the best speakers were, so I’m not going to re-cap anything you saw.  I’m just going to tell you about what you couldn’t see.

September 2024–Color Me A Democrat

By Fraser Perkins —

Fighting Democrats!

Following the Presidential Debate two months ago, Democrats at all levels from the White House to the grassroots acted boldly, strategically and selflessly.  A misstep at any point could have derailed momentum and ensured a Trump victory, but Democrats at all levels rose to the occasion.  Consider the following…
