On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the Palos Verdes Democrats held their annual picnic at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates. This annual event has been a tradition since 2016, missing only the pandemic year of 2020. There was great enthusiasm and a sense of community, with everyone talking about President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race earlier that morning. In response, attendees expressed their strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris. Local news outlets, now hungry for a new angle on the news responded in force, with reporters from the Daily Breeze, Spectrum News, and Fox 11 Los Angeles news coming and interviewing attendees.
Over one hundred thirty attendees enjoyed dinner prepared by Truxton’s Restaurant while listening to Congressman Ted Lieu, Supervisor Janice Hahn, Senator Ben Allen, and Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi talk about national current events and how the presidential election will shape America’s future. They also emphasized the importance of local elections such as the school board race.
Other speakers included RPV City Council Member and PVPUSD School Board Candidate Eric Alegria and RPV City Council Member Paul Seo, RPV City Council Candidate George Lewis, RHE City Council Member Debby Stegura, PVPUSD Board Members Sara Deen and Ami Gandhi, PVLD Board Trustee Zoe Unno and several students from the Students for Environmental Advocacy (SEA). State Assemblyman Dave Min came from Orange County to talk about his race to hold on to the congressional seat in CD 47 vacated by Katie Porter and in side conversations, encouraged our support to Derek Tran, who is running to unseat Michelle Steele in CD 45.
Congressman Ted Lieu was the final speaker. He, like Janice Hahn, lauded the accomplishments of the Joe Biden administration, including leading the country out of the pandemic, record breaking jobs creating, CHIPS and PACT Acts, Infrastructure Law, and Inflation Reduction Act. He also reminded us that 5 years ago, he was the first member of Congress to endorse Kamala Harris when she declared her intention to run for president and is excited to endorse her again. Even though the Biden announcement was just this morning, Ted had already received her call this morning seeking his support. The congresssman expressed his optimism in our path to regaining the House. Democrats have over-performed against the polling at every level of election since the overthrow of Roe v. Wade. The evening concluded after Congressman Ted Lieu administered the oath of office to the incoming executive board.
