PVP Democrats Monthly Meeting
February 19 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
On Februrary 19, 2017 the Palos Verdes Democrats hold the general meeting at 2:30 pm in the community room of the Peninsula Center Library. In addition to our club business, we will have two speakers:
- Our first speaker will be Dorit Cypis, Founder of Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI). MBBI is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) working with partners internationally in war-torn countries to build mediation skills and assist these countries in working towards a more “peaceable” world. MBBI places special emphasis on enhancing skills of women peacebuilders in conflict zones. Additionally, Mediators Beyond Borders is an official observer organization for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, advocating for strengthening mediation structures in the UN.
- Our second speaker is UCLA Law professor, Jonathan Zasloff. Zasloff earned a JD from Yale and a PhD from Harvard (History of American Foreign Policy). As if that were not enough, he is now a rabbinical student! He teaches Torts, Land Use, Environmental Law, Comparative Urban Planning Law, Legal History, and Public Policy Clinic – Land Use, the Environment and Local Government. Zasloff has concerns about the President’s choice for ambassador to Israel, which he sees as a strategy to split the American Jewish community. And he has concerns about the President’s general “hostility toward democracy.”
In a new feature of our monthly meetings, we will set aside time in general meetings for members to discuss worthy democratic activities. This month, member David Hall will talk about the great work being done by the Citizen’s Climate Lobby (CCL) to combat climate change.
Please join us on the 19th. We encourage you to come at 2:00 pm for our social time where we enjoy delicious homemade goodies and conversation with like-minded Democrats.
Please note: The parking lot to the west of the library, which had been library parking, is now closed for construction. Please plan on parking in the roof parking lot or along Deep Valley Drive.
